by Garrett FriskThe primary purpose of Diamond Eye Candidate Report is to bring attention to candidates who haven't otherwise received any news coverage, especially congressional candidates. But ironically, the people whose declarations of candidacy most often go unreported are the incumbent members of Congress themselves. Some incumbents send out a press release confirming their re-election plans, but most quietly file their paperwork without making an announcement; in many cases, nobody knows for sure that a member of Congress is seeking re-election until the final candidate list is released. That's why Diamond Eye Candidate Report emailed the office of every member of Congress who has yet to publicly announce whether they'll seek another term in 2024 to determine who has and hasn't made up their mind. This article will be continuously updated as more offices get back to us. As of now, these are the responses we have gotten: Running for re-election
Still deciding
by Garrett FriskAttorney Greg Wheeler is running for Congress in Ohio's 13th congressional district for a second time. Wheeler previously ran for this district in 2022, winning the endorsement of the newspaper The Plain Dealer but losing the Republican primary by 5.2% to fellow attorney Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, who had the support of former president Donald Trump. Though election forecasters favored her to win, Gesiotto Gilbert lost the general election to Democrat Emilia Sykes, the Minority Leader of the Ohio House of Representatives, by a 5.4% margin. Gesiotto Gilbert has also announced that she will mount a second bid against Sykes, setting up a rematch with Wheeler in the Republican primary. Wheeler's campaign website can be found here. This district currently encompasses the population corridor between the cities of Akron and Canton, but media sources have speculated that Republicans may attempt to redraw the state's congressional maps to be more favorable to them before 2024. However, Governor Mike DeWine has said he "isn't eager" to revisit redistricting, so the current congressional map might stay in place after all. Either way, keeping Sykes in office will be a top priority for House Democrats. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) recently included Sykes on their list of "Frontline" House Democrats who will receive additional assistance in their re-election campaigns. |
