by Garrett FriskThe primary purpose of Diamond Eye Candidate Report is to bring attention to candidates who haven't otherwise received any news coverage, especially congressional candidates. But ironically, the people whose declarations of candidacy most often go unreported are the incumbent members of Congress themselves. Some incumbents send out a press release confirming their re-election plans, but most quietly file their paperwork without making an announcement; in many cases, nobody knows for sure that a member of Congress is seeking re-election until the final candidate list is released. That's why Diamond Eye Candidate Report emailed the office of every member of Congress who has yet to publicly announce whether they'll seek another term in 2024 to determine who has and hasn't made up their mind. This article will be continuously updated as more offices get back to us. As of now, these are the responses we have gotten: Running for re-election
Still deciding
by Garrett FriskRepublican John Curtis was first elected to represent Utah's 3rd congressional district in a 2017 special election, succeeding incumbent Jason Chaffetz, who resigned unexpectedly. Since then, Curtis has faced a high-profile primary challenger every single cycle. In 2018, he was challenged by state representative Chris Herrod, his opponent in the 2017 primary; Curtis won the Republican convention by a big margin and then won the primary by a much bigger margin. At the 2020 convention, perennial candidate Tim Aalders took 34.2% of the vote against Curtis, a surprisingly strong showing. In 2022, Herrod again ran against Curtis, and actually managed to win the convention by a 54.7% to 45.2% margin; however, that didn't stop Curtis from winning the primary in a landslide. In 2024, Curtis will once again face opposition in his primary; accountant and Republican activist Tate Howell has filed with the FEC and announced his campaign for 2024. Howell says he was born in Sandy, grew up in Draper, and now resides in Orem. His campaign website can be found here. Former Summit County councilmember Glenn Howell, who was the Democratic nominee for this district in 2022, has also filed with the FEC to run in 2024, though it does not seem like he has confirmed he will run. In the first quarter of 2023, Howell did not raise any money, but he spent $430 and ended with no cash on hand. This was his website during his 2022 campaign. |
