by Garrett FriskDue to Republican gerrymandering in the 2021 redistricting cycle, there are almost no competitive U.S. House districts remaining in the state of Georgia. This is a stark contrast from the 2010s, which featured numerous high-profile House races in Georgia, most notably the 2017 special election for the 6th congressional district, the most expensive House race in history at the time. However, even though no major election forecaster rates any of Georgia's 2024 House races as anything other than Safe R or Safe D, Democrats have already filed to contest two deeply Republican districts. In the 6th district, financial executive Brian Hopkins has stepped up to challenge freshman Republican Rich McCormick. This district comprises the suburbs and rural areas north of Atlanta, and McCormick was elected to represent it in 2022 with over 62% of the vote. Hopkins's campaign website can be found here. Meanwhile, in the 8th district, Democrat Justin Laster is running against longtime Republican incumbent Austin Scott. Laster, who has worked as a correctional officer, faces an uphill battle in this largely rural district based in southern Georgia. Scott was re-elected with over 68% of the vote in 2022. Hopkins's website can be found here. Comments are closed.
