by Garrett FriskMissouri is not expected to see any competitive House races in 2024; every district is rated as either Safe Democratic or Safe Republican by every major election forecaster, and no incumbents have announced plans to retire as of yet. However, there are still numerous ambitious candidates willing to take on the odds, and three of those Safe Republican districts are already being contested by a progressive. The first is the 3rd district, where app developer Jon Karlen has confirmed he'll make a second run against incumbent Republican Blaine Luetkemeyer. Karlen ran for this district in 2022, but took only 20.2% of the vote in the Democratic primary, compared to the winner Bethany Mann who took 62.2% of the vote. Luetkemeyer defeated Mann in the general election, winning 65.1% of the vote. In the first quarter of 2023, Karlen raised $75 and spent none of it, ending with $3,398 on hand. Karlen's campaign website can be found here. In the 4th district, self-described "progressive activist" Alexander Heidenreich is challenging first-term Republican Mark Alford as an independent. Alford was elected with 71.3% of the vote in 2022. Heidenreich previously operated a cab company in Topeka, Kansas. His campaign website is currently down, but he has established a campaign TikTok page. Finally, in the 8th district, Democrat Randi McCallian has announced she'll seek a rematch against incumbent Republican Jason Smith in 2024; however, she said on June 16 that she needed to "remove myself from society for a bit," so she may have put her campaign on hold. McCallian, who currently serves on the Phelps County Emergency Services Board, was previously the Democratic nominee for this district in 2022, earning only 21.9% of the vote in the general election. In the first quarter of 2023, she raised $1,446, spent $3,147, and ended with $10,000 on hand. McCallian's website can be found here. Comments are closed.
